‘Mermaid tears’ are killing our oceans

Also known as ‘nurdles,’ these tiny pellets are a major source of plastic pollution.Claire Gwinnett/The Conversation February 25, 2019 “Nurdles” may sound cute but they pose a huge risk to the marine environment. Also known as “mermaid tears”, these small plastic pellets are a feedstock in the plastic industry. Instead of being converted into household items, many end up in the ocean, collecting toxins on their surfaces and being eaten by marine wildlife. Not so cute now, are they?...

National Cycling Championships

The objective of ideal-typical communication is to reach mutual understanding. However, this ideal did not quite pan out for residents of Arcadia, Colbyn and Rietondale over the last two weeks. Residents of these suburbs were merely informed – ten days before the national cycling championships – that the race would take place in the streets of these areas and that they would have to stay put in their homes to boot! In short, the following transpired; 1. Just ten...

Cycle race chaos

I was working in Cape Town for State of Nation Address (SONA) and other activities with President and returned to Pretoria yesterday afternoon.  After the serious challenge I experienced recently with the cycling where their security swore at us and wanted to escort me out of Govt Ave and they said we would have to edit gif twenty minutes but two hours later we were still waiting.  My BP was very high and my medication at home. I...

Criminal Activity in Lisdogan Avenue

On Saturday, 19 January 2019, around midday I was walking back to our house in Lisdogan Avenue.  I walked to Loftus Park Shopping Centre and on the way back stopped at Eastwood Village.  I withdrew some cash, went into Postnet to get mail and then proceeded back home.  Less than a block from home an unidentified car stopped next to me. There was the driver and a passenger.  The passenger did all the talking.  I thought they wanted...

2018: A Long-Term Vision for Arcadia

In 2017, the focus of the Committee continued largely to be on the non-enforcement of the By-laws of the City of Tshwane. ARRA witnessed a determined onslaught on our area by irresponsible developers, evidence of estate agent mis-selling, and all aided by the lack of enforcement by the CoT. We were hopeful that the change in local government will positively influence the state of affairs in the city. The CoT has finally agreed to give the RA’s the...

Morning race and litter

Hi Linda There was again a race this morning past my house. Loud music was being played from 6.30 from a car.I had to eventually ask the people concerned to move their car. As you can see from the photos an extraordinary amount of litter was left behind by the runners not to even talk about the noise level. Do you know who the organizers are?I would like that runners are asked to provide their own water and not given...

Street Party Challenge

I, Dan of Pine Street, have been the street representative for Pine Street for many a year now. Since the beginning I decided to invite everyone who owns property or lives in Pine Street every year to a get together to discuss any security concerns, make everyone aware of the current security arrangement we have with Quatro and for the opportunity to put a name to a face and faces to names within our Whatsapp group. There are...
